The European Commission has launched the 5th edition of the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award.
The award is one of the deliverables of the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan and the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020–2025, emphasizing that action at every level is crucial to create genuine change and foster a Union of Equality. The award celebrates cities and regions that promote inclusion, equality, and belonging among their residents.
The initiative highlights how local action is essential to building a Union of Equality and recognises towns, cities, and regions that lead by example in creating inclusive and diverse communities.
There are two main categories:

- Over 50,000 inhabitants
In 2026, there will also be a Special Award for local authorities promoting inclusive labour markets for all, regardless of population size.
All EU Member State local authorities, towns, cities, and regions can apply. Eligible initiatives may address any grounds of discrimination covered by Article 19 of the TFEU, including intersectional approaches.
Former Swedish winners are Växjö kommun and Gothenburg city.
