Tornedalers' Day

15 July is Tornedalers' Day, a celebration of Tornedalers' culture, language, identity and community. Tornedalians, Lantalaiset and Quakers together make up Sweden's least recognised national minorities. Many Tornedalians have lost their language, Meänkieli, and their culture due to the state's assimilation policy. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is investigating violations and abuses against the minority as a result of the assimilation policies of the 19th and 20th centuries, has already released a first interim report and is expected to publish the second in spring 2023. This will be the first comprehensive history of this minority. The aim of the Commission's work is to achieve collective redress for the minority, promote reconciliation and prevent similar events in the future.
