National Day of the Roma

April 8
Romernas flagga

8 April is a day of celebration National Day of the Roma. Roma are recognised as a national minority in Sweden. Roma is not a single ethnic group but a collective name for different Roma groups with different language varieties, cultures and traditions.

In Sweden, there are approximately 50 000 to 100 000 people who identify themselves as Roma. Minority policy is based on self-identification. This means that anyone who identifies as Roma is also considered a member of the Roma minority.

Originating from the first World Roma Congress in 1971, today it is an opportunity to raise awareness, combat discrimination and strengthen inclusion in society and the labour market.

For employers, it is an opportunity to recognise the Roma experience and to continue to develop inclusive workplaces that embrace multiple perspectives.
