International Day of Persons with Disabilities
International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on 3 December each year, was established by the United Nations in 1992 to raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities. The day also marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2006. The Convention is an important step in ensuring equal rights and full participation for all people, regardless of disability.
Objectives and work in Sweden
In 2017, the Swedish Parliament adopted a new national goal for disability policy, based on the UN Convention. The goal is to achieve equality in living conditions and full participation for people with disabilities. To achieve this goal, work is focused on four areas: universal design, measures for accessibility deficiencies, individual support and preventive work against discrimination.
Discrimination and barriers to participation
Disability is one of the seven grounds for discrimination under the Discrimination Act in Sweden. This means that no one should be discriminated against because of their functional capacity. Despite this, many people with disabilities still face major obstacles in the labour market and in education. Statistics show that people with disabilities are overrepresented among those outside the labour market.
Continuing to work for equality
Disability Rights Day reminds us that there is still much to be done to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities in society. We recognise diversity as a resource and believe that inclusion is not only about fairness, but also about creating better and more sustainable solutions for all.
